Kiosk: let customers check their own bike in

Put a tablet on the counter so walk-ins book themselves in. Their check-in lands on your Workboard as an unassigned job.

Last updated 15 September 2026

Kiosk mode turns a tablet at the counter into a self check-in screen. A walk-in picks what they need, leaves their details, describes the bike, and the job is created, the same job a counter check-in creates.

Launching it

Front desk → Kiosk is the launch pad. Launch kiosk mode takes the tablet full screen into a customer-facing page outside the admin app.

  1. 1Give the tablet its own Velobook login, on the Staff tier, under Settings → Team. Sign the tablet in as that account and leave it signed in.
  2. 2Open Front desk → Kiosk and choose Launch kiosk mode.
  3. 3The first time on that tablet, set a 4-digit PIN. It is how your team gets back out.
  4. 4Lock the tablet to the one app: Guided Access on an iPad (Settings → Accessibility), or Screen Pinning on Android. This is the part that keeps a customer out of your admin.
  5. 5Bookmark /admin/kiosk on the tablet's home screen so future launches are one tap.
The PIN is not a lock on your shop's data

The PIN is a convenience: it stops a customer wandering out of the check-in screen by accident. It is stored on that tablet for that shop, once per device rather than per person, and it does not gate the browser's address bar, so anyone who types /admin into it lands in your admin as whoever the tablet is signed in as. That is why the two steps above matter: sign the tablet in as a Staff account, which sees jobs and nothing else, and lock the tablet to the one app with Guided Access or Screen Pinning.

What the customer sees

  • The kiosk wears your shop's theme, the same colours and type as your booking page
  • Four steps: What do you need? (pick a service), Your details, Your bike (a description plus what it is in for), then All good? to review
  • Contact details are the only hard gate. If your shop requires a phone number, a name and a mobile; otherwise a name plus a mobile or a valid email
  • If your shop has a servicing waiver, the signing step comes straight after the booking, on the same tablet
  • The confirmation screen clears after a few seconds. An abandoned check-in is wiped after ninety seconds of no touches, with a warning first

What a check-in creates

  • A normal booking, unassigned, in today's walk-in window
  • It appears on your Workboard in Booked with nobody assigned, and in your bookings list
  • No payment step, no slot picking, no capacity check
  • A customer who leaves an email gets the same confirmation and calendar file your public booking flow sends
If the tablet gets signed out

A tablet left running for weeks can lose its session. The kiosk checks before it takes anyone's details and tells staff to tap the lock icon and sign in again.
